Jennifer’s pulse quickened at the mention of their daughter’s name. “Who?” she asked urgently.
“Gwen,” Jack whispered.
The name hit Jennifer like a physical blow. Gwen was the woman who had caused them immense pain in the past, the person who had nearly destroyed their family. The thought that Abigail had reached out to her was unbearable.
“Why?” Jennifer asked, her voice shaking. “Why would she contact Gwen?”
“I don’t know,” Jack admitted, his voice filled with emotion. “I found out a few weeks ago that Abigail had spoken to Gwen. She didn’t tell you because she knew it would hurt you.”
The deception cut deep, and Jennifer felt tears well up in her eyes. “You hid this from me,” she said, her voice breaking. “I didn’t know how to tell you,” Jack pleaded. “I thought I could protect you.”
Jennifer’s heartache was palpable as she confronted Jack’s betrayal. “You didn’t protect me,” she said, tears streaming down her face. “You lied to me, and now I don’t know if I can trust you again.”
